Eye Exams and Everyday Eye Health

Select a question to read the answer. For guidance about your own eyes, an eye exam is always the best next step.

How often should I have an eye exam?

Many eye care professionals suggest a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years for adults, and more often if you have diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, or noticeable vision changes. Your eye doctor can recommend a schedule that fits your eye health.

Is a vision screening the same as a comprehensive eye exam?

No. A screening, such as one at school or a driver license office, checks basic sharpness of vision. A comprehensive exam also evaluates focusing, eye teaming, eye pressure, and the health of the retina and optic nerve.

Do I need a separate exam for contact lenses?

Yes. A glasses prescription does not include the measurements needed for contacts. A contact lens exam checks the shape and surface of your eyes and how lenses fit, so they stay comfortable and healthy to wear.

When should my child have a first eye exam?

Eye care organizations generally recommend a first exam in infancy, another during the preschool years, and one before a child starts school, followed by regular exams as they grow. Children who squint, rub their eyes, or avoid reading should be checked sooner.

Will my eyes be dilated during my visit?

Dilation is often part of a thorough eye health check because it gives a wider view of the retina. Your vision may be blurry and sensitive to light for a few hours afterward, so sunglasses help and some people prefer to have someone else drive.

What are common signs of dry eye?

Burning, stinging, a gritty feeling, redness, watery eyes, and vision that changes when you blink are all common signs. Heated indoor air during Sioux Falls winters and long hours on screens can make symptoms worse.

Why do people with diabetes need yearly eye exams?

Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels of the retina, a condition called diabetic retinopathy. It often has no early symptoms, so a yearly dilated eye exam helps find changes while there are more options to protect your vision.

Can glaucoma be found before I notice symptoms?

Often, yes. Glaucoma usually affects side vision gradually and without pain. Measuring eye pressure and examining the optic nerve during routine exams can reveal early signs before you notice any change.

What should I bring to my eye appointment?

Bring your current glasses and contact lenses, a list of medications, any vision insurance information you have, and sunglasses in case your eyes are dilated. A short list of questions or symptoms you have noticed is helpful too.

When should I seek urgent care for an eye problem?

Sudden vision loss, a curtain or shadow over your vision, a burst of new floaters or flashes of light, a chemical splash, or an eye injury need immediate attention. For a serious emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
